Plein Air at Camphill-Beaver Farms

Last week I was fortunate enough to be included in the third annual Plein Air for Camphill event hosted at Beaver Farms that is done to help raise funds for the Camp Hill Special School.  
 

It was a virtual "Who's Who" of local painters from the Philly area including many PPAP memembers like David Campbell Wilson, Charles Newman and Nancy B Miller who was the one who started and helped co-ordinate the event in the past. ( Thanks to Nancy B for the photo)

David rode out with me despite the terrible weather, it was raining cats and dogs on Philly, but the rain out near Valley Forge and near the farm was just overcast. I parked my jeep and got straight to work and it was threatening to rain again, so I figured we needed to get cranking before a cloud burst might call it a day. Here is my setup and my final painting for the day. This painting is 10 x 20in oil and I'm pretty happy with the way it came out. Below you can see one of the two paintings Charles did during the paint-out.

David and I choose the same view which was really fun as we could see how each other handled similar scenery. Below dave and Charles discuss the work as one of the many barn cats roamed about.

The sun finally came out at the end of the day as we ate a great BBQ provided by our gracious hosts at the farm, the meat was from the animals raised at the farm and it was all free range and natural and tasted great! If we could only have a great meal like that after each painting session!  There will be an auction of the work done by all of the artists involved at The Rosenfeld Gallery in Philadelphia this fall with proceeds going to the school.

Brandywine Creek

The heat has been pretty bad as most of you know in the last two weeks and that has kept the group from going out to paint, though many of us have been painting in the studio because 95-104 temperatures are not great for painting outside. We hope to go out again this Monday and get back to the plein air an paint as a group--but I didn't want the blog to go silent for too long, so I am posting this little painting I did plain air out in the Brandywine from 2009. It was a nice crisp early November day, and this was painted being the Brandywine Museum, home of the Wyeths and long the Brandywine Creek which runs right past the museum. It was a sort of a dull, misty day until about 30 minutes before the sun set and then the sun came out and gave us some nice contrast and glow.
